Statin Drugs and Children

Active ImageOn July 7, 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a shocking new recommendation that stated children, starting at 2 years of age and no older than 10, should routinely get their cholesterol checked — and that some children as young as 8 should be started on statin drugs to lower their cholesterol and prevent future heart disease.

Blood Glucose — Know Your Number!

Active ImageWhen it comes to blood sugar, the closer you can keep it to the normal range of 80 to 89 mg/dL the better.  For years I have been warning that blood sugars even in the 90 to 100 range show that you are becoming insulin resistant and on your way to diabetes.  A recent study done on 47,000 Kaiser Permanente patients validated this observation.

Birth Control Pills - Still Hold Risks

Active ImageYears ago I started educating health professionals and patients in my practice about birth control pills. If they — or their wives, daughters, or patients were taking them — they should make sure to supplement with a multivitamin and mineral containing higher dosages of B vitamins.

The Straight Facts on Carbs
 Active Image
If you’re a carb lover, now’s the time to get a handle on how many carbs you should be eating every day. This information is not just important for your waistline.
It’s also important to control the potential for disease-causing inflammation that increases with high levels of circulating insulin and blood sugar
— and that may cause cancer.

Rethinking the Risk of Saturated Fat

Active ImageSometimes you have to take a step back before you can move forward. Lets review the relationship of saturated fats (fats from animal products and palm and coconut oils) to heart disease. Back in the 1950s we were told to eat corn and sunflower oils as healthy alternatives to saturated fat. As our consumption of these polyunsaturated fats rose, so did the rate of heart disease.

When Will Low Fat Diets Go Away?
Active ImageFor the average person, the changes we’ve seen as to how diet contributes to heart disease have been interesting, but for many people they have also been exhausting and confusing.

For two decades we were taught that diets high in fat and cholesterol contribute to heart disease; this teaching has been dubbed the “diet-heart hypothesis.” Low fat diets were recommended by every large health organization, and people adopted the low fat way of life. There was only one problem — heart disease rates did not drop. They continued to climb.

What’s the Possible Link Between Seasonal Allergies and Suicide?
Active ImageAnyone who suffers from seasonal allergies knows how depressing it is to experience trouble breathing for weeks at a time. But did you also know that science is uncovering a close relationship between those same seasonal allergies and suicide?

A major study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health examined the relationship between allergies and a history of both “suicide ideation”, i.e., thinking about suicide — all the way up to creating a detailed plan,
and actual suicide attempts.

In addition, surveys of almost 10,000 research subjects showed a “positive and significant correlation” between allergies and suicide.

Liquid Gold, Liquid Life - Water That’s Safe to Drink
Active ImageWe live on a heavily industrialized planet inhabited by an ever increasing population. Here in the US, rivers and lakes may no longer carry cholera and typhoid fever, but keeping our supply of water safe still requires constant vigilance.

Water is, without question, the single most important “nutrient” with which you “feed” your body. And that’s why some recent articles in the news are so disturbing. The Associated Press just reported the results of a 5-month study on the quality of tap water across all 50 states.6 Of the 62 major water providers contacted, only 28 were testing their water at all. The results from those that did test were shocking:

Drinking Water Debate Brings up an Important Health Issue.....Body pH

Active ImageYou know, I remember a time when none of us thought anything about drinking a big glass of water straight from the tap in the kitchen.  Those of us with relatives living in the country were even used to drinking water straight from a spring.  Then came the chlorinating and fluoridating -- and eventually many of us got on the bottled water band wagon.

A New Look at FAT -- Because it Doesn't "Just Sit There"

Active ImageThe discovery of "leptin" in 1994 created an explosion of interest in the "biology of white adipose tissue" -- otherwise known as FAT. You probably remember those photos of seriously obese mice sitting next to their slender littermates -- and the only difference between them was that the thin ones had been given this magic substance called leptin?
